FIRST is an acronym that represents For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.
“The varsity sport for the mind,” First Robotics combines the excitement of sport with the rigours of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team brand, hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It is as close to “real-world” engineering as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.
Built from scratch in only six weeks, these 5 foot tall, 120 pound robots compete in high-intensity robotics-sports. With bragging rights at stake for the teams and the companies that support them, robotics takes on a pro-sports experience. Watch the best of the best in robotics come out to play.
Many universities offer the chance at generous scholarships to students who participate in the FIRST program.
In addition, students learn an incredible array of skills including machining and welding, programming, CAD, engineering, mechanics, public speaking, design, critical thinking, problem solving, mechanics, web design, copy writing, budgeting, leadership, teamwork, and much more.
